About Us

West Pigeon Press is a new international press, dedicated to providing you the best in dark fiction.

How are we going to do that?

Original, Stimulating Content

Have you ever noticed that most “dark fiction” is, frankly, boring and predictable? Hopefully, you too are tired of the same old familiar faces, the same boring authors, and the same trend-chasing editors coughing up the same boring tropes over and over again (supernatural noir; Mammoth book of shitty vampire stories, blah blah blah whatever). Fuck that shit.

We want to be the press to discover the Books of Blood-era Clive Barker, the Dark Gods-era T.E.D. Klein, the Deathbird Stories-era Harlan Ellison, or the Dark Country-era Dennis Etchison. We want to be the press that releases stories like Bright Segment by Theodore Sturgeon, Blood Son by Richard Matheson, The Whimper of Whipped Dogs by Harlan Ellison, or the Dog Park by Dennis Etchison. Yeah, we know our horror fiction.

For instance, check our our first anthology, You Shall Never Know Security, by J.R. Hamantaschen. One day, this anthology will be recognized as a modern classic, and when that day comes, you’ll know you knew about it first.

Professional Pay

We pay professional rates for top quality work. We don’t want to say “professional” quality work, because “professional” denotes something stodgy and boring. We pay professional rates for great work. Now, perhaps we won’t produce that many works a year, but that’s because it pays to produce only quality work.

Not Giving a Shit about Money

Look, we aren’t fucking stupid. We aren’t planning on turning a profit off this. If anything, this is a charitable enterprise. Horror fiction is the beneficiary of our largess. In that regard, we try and make our products as cheap and available as possible. How can we afford to do that? Fortunately, there is a gang of us behind the scenes, and rather than put any excess cash into ski trips or golf outings or anything like that, we put it in this. Horror will thank us in the history books.

If you live in the NYC metro area and shoot J.R. an email, he’ll take you out for coffee to discuss his anthology, horror fiction, whatever. Shoot him a message at jrtaschen@gmail.com. Future contributors take note: we like that idea, and we are probably going to run with it in the future.

Treating our readers and contributors with respect

Everyone working here behind the scenes has experience in the indie horror world. We know what it’s like to send out submissions and never hear anything back. It’s frustrating, it’s unprofessional, and it’s obnoxious. We aren’t like that. We hope to never be like that. We treat people with respect. Count on it.
